My wife and I have been discussing the replacement for one of our cars, I was unaware just how picky she was.
Miata - Too small
Land Rover Discovery Series II, and Range Rover P38's - Too thirsty
Wrangler hard top - Too thirsty, too few doors
Mazda 3 hatch and Protege 5 - Too ugly
Older Impreza - Too 90's looking
BMW sedans - Too expensive to maintain (good thing she knows nothing about Land Rovers or that would have 2 strikes)
Then out of the blue she pitches the idea of a Ranger. All I can think is what happened to the doors and the fuel requirements? I point this out and she says that we still aren't sure if we will have kids because of her back injury. I agree that this is a concern, and all the more reason for me to get a wrangler or a Miata. Shot down again.
I counter with the Forester and Outback, she doesn't like the look of the old forester, and all the Outbacks in our price range have 12 bajillion miles on them.
Subaru Baja - Too ugly
Mazda 3 sedan - OK!
Mazda 6 sedan - OK!
So there we go, I can get a Mazda sedan or a Ranger. Probably not a market that most people cross shop. then again, none of this list is really cross shopped.
Anyone have any suggestions on something that includes the following qualities in one unicorn of a car? 4 + doors, apparently not a hatchback, reliable, good fuel economy, and not soul sucking to drive?

Honda CR-V? Acura whatchamacallit? Hell, put her in a WRX and in 5 minutes she won't want anything else (Oh, and my soul was sucked out a LONG time ago).

Step one: Figure out who'll be the primary driver
Step two: They pick the car
You guys make this marriage thing sound so complicated, but I just solved it right there! /s

The obvious answer is a WRX sedan. If she deals with that one okay she should be comfortable with another.
AMGtech - now with more recalls!

With a rover v8 would likely be the worst financial decision you ever make.
GLI or w210? Don't know what kind of price range you're looking at or what you consider to be good fuel economy...

Chevrolet SS. Pontiac GTO/G8.
What? They get 30-ish MPG on the highway if you drive it right!
Oh, I know! Truck time!

(Puts on flame suit, takes a deep breath in, puffs out chest) what about a MINI Countryman S? 4 doors, over 30mpg even with AWD, and great handling. Plus 3 pedals in any trim! ...if that's important to either of you.

We have the Mazda6 and really like it. Steering and handling is superb, and you can get it in manual in the well-appointed Touring trim. We needed a car that could fit a family of five (including two 6'-1" boys), and the 6 does that very ably. Great space in the back seat. The main issue is the 6 is a bit underpowered, but I suppose that's the price you pay for nearly 40mpg highway.

Guessing you're in the 5-10K range? Nissan Sentra SE-R. Even the 2000-04 have soul.
